J. Cole has had a fantastic year of rapping. He has been taking a break from making new music and releasing old mixtapes and albums never released on major platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. He calls this experiment Inevitable. Some people say these were some of his best projects and that he should have been released on these new platforms. Others thought they should stay on YouTube and other small websites to stay hidden, which would have a legacy on those streaming services.
He had a schedule for releasing these mixtapes and albums every week; there was something new from J. Cole to listen to if you had never heard them, like I never did. He is still releasing new things that were never before seen or heard. The public is getting stuff from 2014 Forest Hills Drive that was never included in the album, or he thought it was more profound for the vibe he was going for.
His first release was “The Come Up.” This was his debut mixtape, and you can tell that Cole has matured not just in his voice but also in the depth of his lyrics. This was fun for Cole as he took other songs’ productions and turned them into his own.
The next he released was “Lights Please”. This is his storytelling coming into full effect. He was talking about how he was feeling about this one girl and how “everything just seemed so right.” This wasn’t an album or mixtape but a single, and this is where Cole felt like it was about to take off and start getting big for him.
The second mixtape that dropped was “The Warm Up” and as I said, Cole thought this was where he was about to turn up the rap industry and make a name for himself, and he most certainly did. He started getting more recognition for the mixtape world, and things were beginning to pick up, and it was only up for there. Davis Greene said, “When I just got into music, these are some of the first artists and mixtapes I listened to. This mixtape made me into a fan.”
His last and arguably best mixtape is “Friday Night Lights” and this was an instant classic. Even if you don’t listen to Cole, you would’ve heard a snippet or one of the songs on this mixtape. This is the biggest mixtape that he came out with, and many think it is the best. Some of his biggest hits from all his mixtapes are on FNL. Before I’m Gone is already one of his most listened-to songs of 2024, even though the song was made in 2010.
He is still releasing some of this new music, and it is going to be interesting to listen to this music from 2007-2012 you can take a look at the interviews at https://www.inevitable.live/. This is were you are going to get your updates and him talking about each project he releases.
