Parenting Styles and Their Impact

When I see how my friend’s parents are and how they treat them I see the differences in my parents and how they treat me. However, there are others with parents who may be too extreme or overbearing with the rules they establish and how they treat their children. Some parents are overprotective and overbearing to the point where the children have little independence, while on the contrary, there are parents who are entirely hands off and give little guidance to their children.

According to New Mayo Clinic, there are four main types of parenting that psychology have identified. Parenting styles are the ways parents guide their children. The four main parenting styles are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful.

Authoritarian

  • Strict rules, high expectations, and a “tough love” approach
  • Involves high criticism, anger, and/or punishment

Authoritative

  • Open communication, solves problems with child
  • Sets clear expectations

Permissive

  • Lenient approach to discipline, indulgent, and more of a peer relationship with their children
  • Children have a high degree of freedom and authonomy

Neglectful

  • Also known as: Uninvolved parenting

All of these styles of parenting can lead to plenty of different outcomes, but there are parents who could care less about what their children have going on. Being on your own when growing up might seem fun because you have freedom that other kids don’t have because their parents care about what they are doing and want the best for them. And this topic is usually addressed because you can’t genuinely try to tell other parents how to teach and treat their children. However, there is a reason why we should address certain parenting styles. Only reason I feel like this would be okay is to see how the children feel about this parenting style. I feel like for the kids with parents who care less for them is most likely to not have certain skills growing up, this could lead to outcomes that can impact their life overall. Parents who are strict could sometimes lead to positive outcomes but most times it leads to somewhat negative outcomes. Which could be caused from overdoing the strict role and it could lead to depression or just a bad relationship with your parents. The main reason why this problem needs to be addressed is because the children’s future could be affected by how they are because of the ways they were raised. According to College Confidential, a website that talks about numerous topics, it stated that students who are at college and had strict parents have gained freedom from leaving the home that was strict, have more problems and are more likely to commit rebellious acts that they wouldn’t participate in when they were under their parents supervision. A little freedom could lead to some dumb decisions from good kids.
