Disney officially released a live action version of Snow White on March 21, 2025 starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot playing the Evil Queen. It has started a ton of controversies; critics have criticized Disney for modernizing the classic version of Snow White’s story in a number of ways. The choice to cast Rachel Zegler, a Colombian-American actress, has led to backlash as the original Snow White character is described as having “skin as white as snow.” In contrast, supporters praised Disney for promoting diversity and pushing back against stereotypes.
Additionally, prior to the movie’s release, Zegler also stated that the film would have a more progressive storyline. “She’s not going to be saved by the Prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Zegler said in an interview. The controversies against Zegler described her as not “White enough,” even though she wasn’t “Hispanic enough” when she was playing in the 2021 rendition of West Side Story as Maria. Moving on from Zegler, people have also criticized how the dwarfs are CGI of only one person, instead of multiple people playing as the dwarfs.
The film was initially set for a spring 2024 release. This delay is speculated to be due to various controversies involving the cast, particularly the stances of Zegler and Gadot on Palestine and Israel. Since Gal Gadot is Pro-Israel, serving in the IDF as a fitness instructor, and Zegler being Pro-Palestine. The two have expressed opposing views on Palestine and Israel; Gadot’s stance has been consistent with her public support for Israel over the years contributing to genocidal war efforts. Conversely, Rachel Zegler has consistently shown support for Palestine.
In 2021, Zegler made a statement on social media saying, “It will always be Free Palestine.” Since October 2023, she’s actively encouraged her followers to support a ceasefire and donate to emergency relief in Gaza. Zegler has shared her activism through various posts, including posts urging people to contact their representatives and to avoid brands boycotted by the BDS movement in support of Palestine. Despite facing controversies that could jeopardize her career, Rachel Zegler continues to be a strong advocate for Palestine.
Snow White is currently the lowest ranking movie with 1.6/10 on IMDb, 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 6% on Google users who liked the movie. Most of the hate and horrible reviews are being directed towards Gal Gadot, dropping the ratings to a horrible low. Many people have complained about how her acting is horrible and that she shows zero emotion on screen. Multiple clips have been shown on different social media platforms and many do not plan on viewing it. Most of the controversies were led on TikTok and Instagram, degrading the movie in multiple ways.
