Students and staff participated in the annual spirit week at Belleville High School from October 6th through October 10th in celebration of the Homecoming dance.
Many students at BHS share the same opinion about this year’s Spirit Week not living up to its full potential.
Students were asked to describe Spirit Week in one word, many describing it as “terrible,” “lame,” and “absent.” Students noticed that there wasn’t as much hype when it came to the Spirit Week themes, but instead, there were complaints. Many were questioning as to why there were multiple color-themed days as opposed to just one color-themed day.
Students mentioned that, in the past, there have been voting systems in place for Spirit Week themes, and were confused as to why those voting systems were not implemented this year. Junior Danielle Williams stated, “I think we should’ve voted for the Spirit Week themes because we didn’t have an idea of what they were going to be. People didn’t like the spirit days and how Throwback Thursday was removed.”
Students also thought that the BHS dress code policies were a huge factor in the selection of Spirit Week themes. Students compared BHS Spirit Week to other schools in the area and noticed that other schools weren’t as strict as BHS. Senior Evelynn Similo states, “I think the school may be a little too strict on stuff, especially with the dress code–some outfits or costumes may need certain pieces to bring the whole outfit together.”
Some argue that Spirit Week was decent and that others shouldn’t complain, but the participation numbers have visibly decreased over the years. Students are evidently not showing any interest or school spirit, which may affect the experience of others.
If we want the participation numbers to increase, voting systems being put into place would make a large impact on students’ attitudes towards Spirit Week. Voting systems would boost the hype within the school because students would be looking forward to following the themes that they’re interested in.
