School dances should be more fun and students are hoping they change.
In my four years of high school, I went to a homecoming dance once and it was terrible. A good high school experience is mandatory for everyone. To me, a good high school experience comes with a good dance, a dance like Homecoming and Belleville High School’s Coming Home Dance is one of the worst experiences for most. I’m not just speaking for myself, I know I can speak for many other students. After speaking to some students, they told me what would make Belleville High School’s Homecoming dance so much better. To start off, we need to cut the lights off. The lights make it so everything is on full display. Students feel seen and uncomfortable. People want to feel the moment, and keeping the lights on is doing the complete opposite. I understand the school wants to make sure everyone is safe and no one is doing anything inappropriate but at the same time, it’s high school, let the teens be teens. Next, people feel like the dance should not be in the school, it feels less of an experience going to a school dance in the same place you eat lunch at. The school can raise a lot of money or even better make the students pay for the hall, no one wants to dance in a cafeteria where we ate chicken fingers the day before. For one year we need to have a Homecoming in a hall, it would be a better experience for most people.
