Belleville High School’s new cell phone policy has students angry. If students do their work and don’t cause any problems in school whatsoever, it’s only right to let them pull out their phones, right? Well, wrong. Belleville has a new rule that no matter the student or their success in that class, phones must be away at all times.
Being on your phone can be distracting one-hundred percent, but after talking with several students, they all agreed that after work has been completed, it would be best to just let those students use their phone. Every student has also said that they don’t follow the cell phone policy anyway, which makes phone usage against the rules to use during class only.
This creates sneakier behavior in students who lack integrity and wish to be on their phones anyway. So, why not just allow them? Studies show that social media can help push more students to learn. For example, on TikTok, which almost every kid has, there is a STEM section where kids are educated about science and physics. It is a proven fact that some virtual apps can help increase student engagement in class. An example of this would be an app called Photomath. Photomath can walk students through the whole process of doing a math problem if not understood in class. Overall, phones should only be allowed for students who put their work first and get it done, and let the cell phone rule only apply to those who don’t.
