The Denton Road Bridge, located in Belleville, connects Belleville Road to Denton Road. For many years, it was largely overlooked—until its closure in September 2022. Since then, some residents believe its absence has contributed to the increased traffic in downtown Belleville.
For quite some time, the bridge has been closed for repairs, though little progress was made, and the right turn lane remained blocked off. With its prolonged closure, many locals have speculated that the bridge is haunted. According to the Belleville Area Independent, “People often see the spirit of a woman surrounded by a blue light, usually soaking wet and carrying a baby.” Legend has it that if you pull up to the bridge at night and turn off your headlights, you might see mysterious orbs or even catch a glimpse of the wandering woman. Given the bridge’s proximity to a cemetery, some believe this adds credibility to the ghostly tales—depending on how much you believe in the paranormal.
In more practical news, the bridge is expected to reopen by 2026, bringing hope to the community. The updated structure will feature a modern design, with a height similar to the Belleville Bridge. The new build will include sleek lighting and decorative blocks to enhance its appearance. Fishbeck Engineering designed the replacement, with the total cost estimated between $4 million and $6.5 million. As part of the project, DTE has removed outdated natural gas lines, and the principal contractor has started dismantling the old decking and side railings.
Originally built in 1927, this 97-year-old bridge is finally being updated for modern use. Whether you believe in its haunted reputation or simply wish it had remained untouched, the Denton Road Bridge has played an important role in Belleville’s history—just like the Belleville Bridge itself.
