There is only one word I have to describe the Don Toliver concert I attended this past Thursday; explosions. From the very moment he came out performing his song “E85”, there were explosions and pyrotechnics taking over the stage. In all, it was the best and craziest concert I’ve been to so far.
I was so happy when the intro to “OPPOSITE” started playing right after Don finished his first song. His set list was truly the set list of my dreams. He played almost all of my favorites from his discography, “E85”, “Excavator”, and “TORE UP”. Of course, many people had complaints that he didn’t play more of his old songs. However, this was called the OCTANE tour, which is a tour for his new album OCTANE. Don did actually play a few throwbacks, like “Lemonade” and “Cardigan”.
One complaint I do have though is that Don isn’t the greatest performer himself. He did sing, but a lot of his performance was the backtrack to his songs playing louder than his actual voice. It’s a valid complaint, but personally, I was far back enough to the point where it wasn’t bothering me.
Additionally, my seat was actually still pretty good. The concert was at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan, and if you’ve ever been there, it’s not that big of a stadium compared to Ford Field. From someone who saw The Weeknd at Ford Field in the nosebleeds, the nosebleeds at Little Caesar’s allowed me to be a little bit closer to the stage.
Nonetheless, I loved the entire concert. It lasted about three and a half hours including the openers. The first opener, SoFaygo, was enjoyable. He has some popular songs that blew up on TikTok a few years ago, so I could recognize a few songs. Honestly though, the second opener, SahBabii, was not too enjoyable. To be frank, his songs pretty much just felt like noise pollution ringing in my ears throughout the stadium.
Just one piece of advice, never wear boots without socks to a concert. My feet were completely cut up and blistered. It was so worth the look though!
