BHS Varsity Basketball Season Update

Belleville men’s varsity basketball has had a good start to the season. They started off the season winning in their opener against Lincoln High School. They followed the next game with a tough loss to Waverly on the road. Since this, the boys have made their season look easy. Winning the next 7 straight to have a record of 8-1. Men’s Basketball is currently 3-0 in conference play with wins against Churchill, John Glenn, and Franklin. This makes them tied for first place in the KLAA conference with Wayne Memorial, and Canton High School. In a non-conference play, the guys are sitting at 5-1 with their most impressive win coming against 8-4 Thurston High School on Saturday. Last season, men’s basketball, unfortunately fell to this program 71-64 at the start of the season. They had to battle adversity that game because it was played at their home court. From earning the record of 8-1, it has ranked the team number 24 in the state for men’s basketball. They are one of only two teams in the KLAA that are ranked inside of the top 25 in the state. This matchup between the two ranked teams comes on January 21st, at Wayne Memorial which is one of the highly anticipated match-ups of the month. With this record, men’s basketball is playing better than last season, as shown by their record. The team’s last season finished 18-6 and 13-2 in conference play, finishing 3rd in KLAA. Their two losses were both to an unbeaten Dearborn team who ended up eventually losing their first game in the state quarterfinals. Going into the playoffs, men’s basketball had a good run, beating Romulus in the first round of playoffs 53-43. Winning this matchup meant the team would play Saline in the second round of playoffs. Going into this Saline game, Belleville basketball was sitting at 18-5 which was a good record. The boys unfortunately lost this game 54-49 to a very good Saline team, who would eventually fall to Wayne Memorial the next round of playoffs. This season is looking like a good year, which will lead the team into a further playoff run. Senior Chinasa Agbaeze is hopeful they’ll make it to Breslin in March, “I believe we’ll be at the Breslin this year, we’re starting to figure it out and it’s showing. We’re going to show the state what Belleville basketball is all about.” The Breslin Center at Michigan State hosts the annual state semi-finals and finals. Let’s root our boys on and hope they make it to demonstrate their Tiger pride!
