Members of the BHS National Honors Society chose the Harper Strong Foundation for their fall fundraiser. Members will be donating from now until November 3rd.
NHS members voted on several charities for the fall fundraiser. Ms. Johnson, a BHS teacher and advisor, explained, “The Harper Strong foundation won by an overwhelming amount of votes.”
Harper Strong provides toys for hospitals and supports other foundations helping children. The fundraiser aims to support families affected by cancer and children with life-threatening illnesses who must be hospitalized.
According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, “each year in the U.S. there are an estimated 15,780 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer.” Additionally about 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.
In addition to this, the foundation does toy drives to give joy to children who are hospitalized during the holidays. The toy drive’s mission statement states, “Harper’s passion is to make children smile and alleviate some of the burden on their families.”
However, there is also an opportunity for non-members and students to get involved at any time. They can visit harperstrong.org and send donations if they wish to.
