After an impressive season, four lady tigers made BHS history. Participating in the Girls KLAA East Conference Championship held at BHS on November 8, the girls smashed a 25-year-old record in the 200 Medley Relay with an outstanding time of 1:55:92. The team competed against Livonia Churchill, Dearborn, Howell, and Wayne Memorial.
The relay team, composed of Miranda Phelps, Sadie Etheridge, Keira Fredrick, and Natalie Hungerford finished strong with an anticipatory crowd, with both stunning personal and team-based performances. After consistent effort with morning practices and training, their work paid off.
“I’m so happy I got to see it.” Says coach Aaron Lang, the initial record being set three years prior to the genesis of his coaching journey. “The very first meet, we came pretty close to beating it, so we knew we could get there. We had some setbacks throughout the season; we tried a few times and got within a half second each time.” He continues. The team was neck and neck with Dearborn, who finished a mere two seconds after the Lady Tigers. However, after working through their setbacks, the team managed to achieve their longstanding goal.
“I felt a mix of excitement and nerves during the race.” Claims Natalie Hungerford, grade 11. “As a team, we all had to contribute to the relay in order to get our best times and cheer each other on.”
The team celebrated their win by cheering and congratulating each other, later receiving rewards and recognition at the annual banquet. They have been recognized by the school and community, with their names holding a place on the record wall. Miranda Phelps, grade 9, will go on to participate in the state meet held at Oakland University. The girls will continue to practice and persevere, prepping for an impressionable season in the coming year!
