Have you ever wished your favorite food was on the school menu? What if you had the chance to vote? Recently, VBPS District Chef Craig Ash, with 17 years of experience in the food industry, has taken initiative to improve student nutrition, now offering students to vote on the school lunch menu.
With an initiative to improve nutrition and wellness, Mr. Craig Ash has had this idea brewing for years. Recently, the first voting round was launched to BHS students, giving them a voice and an option for their own nutritional needs.
“The first time we ran the student choice we had about 60 kids actually vote on the dishes they liked the best,” says Ash, following the first time he ran the voting process. Voting can be achieved during all three lunches, with each date being posted on the Tiger Ten announcements. The more students that vote, the more tailored the lunch options will be.
“I truly feel food is a main component to help our young students perform their best in and outside of the classroom. I know I can’t please everyone, but this voting will help me see what the students want to eat, and we can change up menus and help more kids eat lunch,” claims Chef Ash.
Students are more likely to fuel themselves when they have the food options they desire. As the District Chef, Craig Ash’s role is menu planning, with an immense variety of ten-thousand different recipes!
As this new policy continues, BHS plans to spread the awareness of nutritional importance, offering new varieties and choices. With an increase in student interaction, BHS strives to grow this policy, possibly offering new voting additions in the future as well.
