For high school students interested in science, the Bio-Med program offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience while getting paid.
The eight-week summer program, running from June 15 through August 7, allows students to step into the world of biomedical research. Participants, known as Bio-Med focus scholars, receive $4,000 for completing the program, making it both an educational and financial opportunity.
To be eligible, students must currently live in Michigan, attend high school, and have an interest in biology. Attendance is also a key expectation, as participants are required to be present for 35–40 days throughout the program. Because the program is based near Ann Arbor, students must also live within a reasonable commuting distance.
The program is designed for rising juniors and seniors, particularly those attending Lincoln High School, Belleville High School, or Ypsilanti Community High School. Applicants should also be planning to attend college and have taken courses such as math, biology, or chemistry.
What makes this program stand out is the level of hands-on experience students receive. Participants work directly with scientists from the University of Michigan, spending their days in a lab setting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. With the guidance of a mentor, students conduct their own biomedical research projects, something many don’t experience until college or beyond.
Throughout the program, students are expected to think and work like real researchers. They will write a research paper based on their findings and present a 10-minute presentation explaining what they discovered. In addition, students participate in a college prep course, where they begin the college application process.
Beyond academics, the program helps students grow in ways that go beyond the classroom. Participants develop problem-solving skills and learn how to navigate challenges when answers are not immediately clear. While the process can sometimes be frustrating, it builds resilience and confidence.
Students also gain valuable communication skills by working alongside professionals and presenting their research. Instead of simply learning about science, participants actively engage in it, conducting hypothesis-driven investigations that mirror real scientific work.
