A common sight is students wearing headphones while working on their Work or simply an assignment. While some teachers might be okay with it, others might disagree. This debate has been more common because of how more technology is being added to the classrooms, many students think it helps them focus. While working on their class, by adding music, it creates a quieter environment that allows students to concentrate. As well as this, it reduces distractions, allowing students to be more focused on what’s in front of them. It could also reduce stress in the environment, as well as motivating students to do their assignments.
Bryson Dugas said, “When I listen to music I can focus more because it helps me ignore everything around me.” The type of music most common is usually instrumental music or quiet background music. Having lyrics in songs might distract students from their focus. While working on their schoolwork, it seems less overwhelming when listening to music and also more enjoyable.
On the other hand, not all teachers and students tend to agree. Some teachers and students agree that when listening to music, they get distracted from their work. Choosing songs to listen to or even checking phones can be a distraction to the student and waste time that should be spent working. As well as this, students who listen to beats or lyrics might not be able to concentrate as much as they would without the music.
“It’s sometimes a good thing but the students often focus on the music than the assignment,” said Kyle Harvey.
Basically, when listening to music, students need to focus on their assignments. There is concern about how students wearing headphones could hurt their communication with teachers. This could be because of how they can’t hear instructions or discussions, which can be an interruption to their learning. Students all learn in different ways. In conclusion, it all comes down to the situation and the student. While listening to music it could help a student focus and reduce stress. But, it could also reveal a harm by them not benign aware of their surroundings or poor communication.
