DETROIT, MI- On October 31, 2025 Belleville High School students attended the Youth Health Expo hosted by Wayne State University students.
The Wayne State University Youth Health Expo, also known as the Detroit Youth Health Expo (DYHE), is an annual event hosted by WSU students and officials with a goal to inspire high school students to explore healthcare careers. It offers interactive and informational sessions with healthcare professionals offering opportunities and more.
This annual event is very important because it addresses the limit of healthcare professionals from various areas in Detroit, inspiring its high school students to pursue careers in the healthcare and medical field.
Some college to career pathways included when you attend the DYHE: Wayne Medicine BCAP, Wayne Med Direct Program, Henry Ford Surgical Mentorship Program, and Doctors of Tomorrow- UMMS.
BHS counselor, Ms. Nina Abbott- Burton also joined this special annual event, and luckily I was able to reach her. Focused on the students’ full potential, Ms. Abbott-Burton said, “It exposes students to a variety of healthcare careers and they also have an opportunity to network with undergraduate and medical students.”
Finally, it’s time to interview and recognize students who were also involved in the Youth Health Expo. Their dreams and aspirations are very important, and I am honored to share them.
Quentin Stebbins, a sophomore at BHS said, “My dreams and aspirations are to make it to college and get a doctorate degree in pediatrics.”
Kimora Thorngren, a BHS freshman added, “My focus is more into doctoring, and trying to figure out what kind of doctor I want to be.”
Other students included are: NaShawn Howard, Jourdyn Brooks-Pride, Miranda Phelps, Jocelyn Quiroz-Aguilar, Elliot Taylor, and Jarel McMillion.
In conclusion, this annual event is dedicated to all the students, undergraduate, doctorate, etc., who have a strong interest in the health and medical field. It’s impacted 250+ students, over $16,000 raised, 29 healthcare vendors, and 11 participating schools.
