The Benefits of Staying Organized As a High School Student
By: Makaela Mongo
Have you ever had something for school that’s really important, but you forgot about it? Like if you woke up one morning and realized you had a test, but didn’t study the night before to prepare. For high school students more specifically, an intense amount of pressure from school can be overwhelming, and jam-packed with important events that may be hard to keep up with.
One Belleville High School junior said, “I feel off track and lost in my classes”, when being asked about how forgetting important school events has negatively affected her.
Another student said she uses methods of organization, which keeps her up to date and prepared.
Some methods that could lead to student success would be to organize due dates in a planner or notes app. An article from Lakshyaschool.in says that, “When children are organized, they have an easier time focusing on their schoolwork and completing assignments in a timely manner.” Another tip could be to reach out to a group of students to get together and study or hold each other accountable when it comes to getting work done. Lastly, it could be beneficial to decline plans with friends or family if you know you have important due dates or things at school you need to prepare for.
The major benefits of these organizational skills is an increase of student productivity and improvement of time management skills. Habits like these are helpful not only for current times in school, but also for college or jobs. Students with better organizational skills achieve higher academic performance, this was recorded as there was a 65% reduction in missing assignments for students who used a planner.
If you want to be successful you have to make noticeable changes. It’s not a bad thing to need to improve, because it can allow for necessary growth. It can allow you to form healthy habits and skills you need to be successful.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going” was once coined by Jim Ryun, a former Olympian and American politician.
