So close to what? Tate McRae is so close to being one of the most iconic popstars at 22 years old.
Tate McRae, full name Tate Rosner McRae, has developed an extremely successful career this 2025. From releasing a hit album and its deluxe, alongside collaborating with the “F1” movie to make a song that is now nominated for the Grammy’s Best Pop Recording award. It’s safe to say she is well on her way to claiming more nominations in the future.
Looking back at this year, McRae gave us her third studio album, “So Close to What”, February 21st. “It’s ok I’m ok”, “2 hands”, and “Sports car” all reached the Billboard Hot 100 as three of the singles she debuted before the entire album was released. Then, all 16 tracks came out and solidified her icon status. Every song was a smash, “Sports Car” being the most streamed at about 635 million listens. This hit single was also nominated for a Kid’s Choice Award for Favorite Viral Song.
After releasing “So Close to What”, McRae announced her Miss Possessive tour, beginning on March 18th in Mexico City. 83 shows, 21 songs, and sound checks before each show for VIP ticket holders. McRae opens with her song inspiring the tour’s title, “Miss Possessive.” Then, she closes out the show with “Greedy”, arguably the most famous song that she’s known for.
More recently, McRae released the deluxe version of “So Close to What” titled “SO CLOSE TO WHAT??? (deluxe)”, revealing five new tracks. She also included her single “TIT FOR TAT” directed towards her ex-boyfriend,The Kid LAROI, following their breakup over the summer.
Examining closer, McRae’s notoriously-incredible dance skills took over her 2025 career. This year especially, she’s received lots of backlash from how much she dances during her concerts. Many of McRae’s performances are extremely choreography-heavy where she’s mixing a style of hip-hop and pop styles that require great stamina. For instance, McRae’s VMAs performance left its audience stunned. Cosmopolitan magazine writer says “The Canadian pop princess brought on steam, high-energy choreo while hitting her marks in black sand and staying on key, and honestly, her main stage moment was one for the books.”
Knowing this, the backlash from fans of McRae has increased within the past year, especially with her being on tour. Her lip syncing has caused an uproar as she continues to dance choreography that calls for high energy moves. Fans say they feel “duped” and are wasting their money just to watch McRae lip sync instead of actually singing.
Tate, being the iconic woman she is, clapped back on her TikTok account. Back in November, she posted a clip from her tour in Austin, Texas where she’s belting out her powerful song “Purple lace bra”. She captioned it straight to her doubters, “Cuz apparently I don’t sing in my shows :)”, proving them wrong.
All in all, McRae has had an incredible year. Her million-dollar tour, new albums, and high-energy choreography have taken over the internet this 2025. McRae fans, including me, are very ready to see what she has next in the upcoming year.
