After high school, students have a big choice to make: what to pursue. Trade school or university is the decision of many. The two paths may result in successful careers, but are extremely different in terms of the way they work, what they teach, and the length of time they require.
Vocational or technical schools or trade schools are schools that specialize in a particular job skill. Students are not required to take a diverse selection of courses, but rather, they are trained to become an electrician, a welder, a mechanic, a cosmetologist or a medical technician. The aim is straightforward: study what you must, and come to work. The trade school programs are completed within a few months to two years.
Universities are different. They provide a wider education which incorporates general subject such as math, science and writing and a major choice. Students can study business, engineering, psychology or hundreds of other areas. The average university education is four years and there are even more jobs that need further schooling than that. “Universities offer a chance to explore a variety of disciplines and develop critical thinking skills before locking into a single career path,” says English Language Arts Teacher Adam Howard.
The other significant variation is cost. Trade schools tend to be a lot less expensive as compared to universities. The programs are less focused and are shorter, which means that students usually graduate with fewer debts. Universities are on the other hand costly, particularly when you stay at the university or are enrolled at a private school. There is also a difference in the learning style. Trade schools are practical. Students are able to spend more time on practical skills that they will employ in the job. Colleges are more inclined to lectures, textbooks, and theory, in the first two years. “There is incredible value in both paths. Some students thrive in a traditional lecture setting, while others excel when they can work with their hands right away,” noted Math Teacher Rachel Jager.
Careers also can be different. The graduates of trade schools tend to get into the labor market faster and begin to earn sooner. There are numerous employment opportunities that are very demanding and well paying. University graduates can be more flexible and advance to higher positions in their careers, particularly those that need a degree. The two ways are not better than each other. It depends on the student. Others like practical labor and those who want to begin their jobs early. There are others that desire a more widespread education or degree to their preferred profession.
Ultimately, time, price, style of learning, and career objectives are what can distinguish the trade schools and the universities. The option that is the most appropriate to your future is the best one.
