Procrastination is something almost every high school student deals with, whether it’s putting off homework, waiting until midnight to start an assignment, or studying for a test the morning of. At schools like Belleville High School, students balance sports, jobs, family responsibilities, and classes every day, which can make it easy to fall behind. While a lot of people think procrastination is just laziness, research shows it is actually connected to stress, anxiety, and fear of failure.
According to research published through the National Library of Medicine, procrastination affects the majority of students and is considered one of the most common academic struggles among teenagers and college students. Studies referenced by the American Psychological Association found that around 80% to 95% of college students procrastinate regularly, showing just how widespread the problem really is.
A big reason students procrastinate is because people naturally choose things that feel good in the moment over things that are stressful. Social media, video games, and streaming apps are a lot easier to focus on than homework after a long school day. Research from Psychology Today explains that procrastination is often about avoiding negative emotions like anxiety or pressure, not simply “being lazy.”
For many students, fear of failure plays a role too. When the pressure to do well feels overwhelming, avoiding an assignment can feel like temporary relief. Delaying work lowers that stress in the moment, even if it only makes things harder later.
“I always tell myself I’m going to start my work earlier, but then I end up waiting until the last second,” said Belleville High School senior Micah Whitfield. “Afterward I regret it because I’m stressed the entire time.”
Even though procrastination is common, experts say there are ways to manage it. Creating schedules, limiting distractions, and breaking assignments into smaller pieces can all help students stay on top of their work. In the end, procrastination is not just about being lazy, for many students, it is connected to stress, pressure, and trying to balance everything at once.
